The transformation of Mumbai took place from seven separate islands to a massive reconnected network of roads and rails. This work was largely done to reshape Mumbai to be one of the most important ports on the Arabian sea. 

Following the educational and economic development of Mumbai, it became a strong base for the Indian national movement. After independence, it became a part of the Bombay state, and in 1960, separated and became the capital of the new state of Maharashtra.
