In this article, we delve into the history of this wondrous city, and how it came to be the Metropolis that we know of today.

History of Mumbai

Home to the Maratha-speaking Koli people for centuries, Mumbai was originally constituted as seven separate islands rules by hereditary and indigenous kingdoms. After the industrial revolution, when the Europeans set sail from their homelands in search of raw materials, the Portuguese were the first to stumble across the islands of Mumbai.

The islands were soon ceded to the Portuguese and were ruled by them till the east India company took over. The departure of the Portuguese made it easy for the British to take over the jurisdiction of the islands. The marriage of Catherine of Braganza to Charles II in 1661 resulted in Charles receiving the ports of Tangiers and the Seven Islands of Bombay as dowry, thus leading to the British take over of Bombay.

The modernization of Mumbai began with the Hornby Vellard project, which sought to reclaim the areas between the seven islands and the sea. The transformation of Mumbai took place from seven separate islands to a massive reconnected network of roads and rails. This work was largely done to reshape Mumbai to be one of the most important ports on the Arabian sea.

Following the educational and economic development of Mumbai, it became a strong base for the Indian national movement. After independence, it became a part of the Bombay state, and in 1960, separated and became the capital of the new state of Maharashtra.
